Last week I gave a speech at my friend's wedding. I talked how they met, as I was the matchmaker. My fiancee asked me if I was nervous and I said no, nowadays I’m never nervous when speaking in front of others, or in public. I get nervous from other things like not being on time, heights, turbulence when flying etc. But there was a time when I was, and here is how I overcame my fear. Here are my five tips on how to give a speech and not be nervous.

  1. Be prepared: practice your speech until you feel comfortable, for yourself, in front of your pillows or in front of someone close. 
  2. Rewrite if needed: write your speech as you would speak. Don’t include complicated words or phrases, it will only make you lost. 
  3. Visualise: our brains are fantastic in the way that we can travel in time, to the place and time when the speech will take place. Visualise yourself being just there holding your speech and imagine yourself thanking the crowd and walking of the floor or scene with a smile and a feeling of success. 
  4. Make memory cards: like the ones the use on TV. Either with the full speech on, or with keywords to remember. 
  5. Smile, a lot: Smiling relaxes the facial muscles and calms the nervous system. Laughing sends more oxygen to the brain. That triggers the release of brain chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals help us feel positive and calm.
